Hair transplantation is hair restoration surgery done for baldness due to any reason in which your own hair from back of your head is taken and planted on front of your head to restore youthful hairline. The transplanted hair looks completely natural and grows like normal hair. This procedure takes only few hours and done under local anesthesia. Hair transplant is also done for eyebrows, eye lashes, moustache and beard.

If you’re getting the hair transplant procedure, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the hair will be planted, creates spaces or slits with a fine needle, the surgeon or surgeon’s team will trim the back of your head. The surgeon will remove hair roots (hair follicles) one by one from the trimmed part of back of the head. After the grafts are prepared, each graft is placed in one of the spaces created in front of head.

Dependent on the number of roots you’re getting, the procedure will take about 4 to 6 hours. In a single sitting around 2000 hairs follicles or more can be transplanted. You might need second session later on if you remain losing your hair or if you want thicker hair.

After hair transplant you can go home and continue your daily routine except that you will be instructed to avoid any exercise or hectic activities and bending down for around 10 days.

About three to four months following a hair transplant session, the new hair begins to grow out of skin from transplanted follicles and in the next two to three months, hair take on a natural form and will remain to grow for a lifetime. The donor site from (the area from which hair is taken for transplant) shrinks and becomes hardly noticeable znd gets completely hidden in the surrounding hair.

There is no age limit to get hair transplant done. You can have it done at whatever age.

This procedure is done by plastic surgeons. The surgeon will take a detailed history, perform examination, counsel you about the procedure and associated risks. You can discuss your expectation with the surgeon before getting the procedure done.

• What usual precautions should I take after transplant?

For the initial two weeks you would be extra precautions while cleaning your head but after 2 weeks you can shampoo your hair in a normal way. Surgeon will instruct you to avoid

caffeinated and fizzy drinks and to avoid alcohol. You will need water spray to keep your head clean of scabs for initial few days. Also, no smoking five days before and 15 days after transplant.

• Do I need to shave my whole head before transplant?

No, there is no need to shave your full head. If you want to get your full head shave, you can. Otherwise, surgeon’s team will only shave small area from back of your head from where hair will be taken for transplant which is the donor area.
